Art Jewelry by Mikhail Smolkin opened its doors in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, in 1993. But, Mikhail Smolkin, Russian-born artist and jewelry designer, has spent several decades refining his skill and developing his one-of-a-kind talent.
Mikhail's student and professional years were spent in St. Petersburg, Russia, unarguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world and a treasury of European art. Mikhail received degrees in Engineering and Industrial Art and pursued a career in the engineering field. While achieving a successful career as an engineer, Mikhail never gave up his art.
An accomplished sketcher and painter, he fell in love with the art of jewelry and it became his passion. He started carving cameos and, soon
thereafter, began creating pins, rings and earrings. After perfecting his skills for more than 20 years, Mikhail abandoned his engineering profession and devoted a full-time career entirely to his art. For several years, he designed jewelry in Ukraine before emigrating.
When he, along with his family, moved to the United States and settled in Charleston in 1990, he soon realized he was the only cameo and jewelry craftsman in the area. He began working for a local jewelry store and, as his reputation of making unique and exquisite pieces continued to grow, Mikhail decided to open his own store -- Art Jewelry by Mikhail Smolkin.
Today, Art Jewelry is one of the few stores that offers handmade, custom jewelry. In addition to their unique creations, Art Jewelry showcases antique and estate jewelry from Edwardian, Victorian and Art Deco eras, as well as a few hand-selected contemporary pieces.
